JOPPOLO

Joppolo is a small town nestling on a high tuff cliff in Mt Poro area. It overlooks the coast and faces the Gulf of Gioia Tauro. It is located 21 km far from Tropea. Luxuriant olive groves and blooming gardens alternate with wonderful sand and rock beaches. Far away, the Aeolian Islands and Sicily can be spotted. The origins of Joppolo are unknown. Tradition has it that it was founded by a Greek man named Artemidoro Joppolo, who, in the 14th century, was granted land properties by king Charles II, and gave the land his name. Experts maintain that the center was founded in the 9th century by a group of Basilian monks who called it Sant’Euplo. The Siroto Mill, a rectangular-shaped, two-story building deserves a visit. The ancient Parish Church keeps several works by local artists. The Sanctuary of Poro was founded by a monk in the 14th century. The 16th-century Parnaso Tower stands on a little promontory along the coast.

Joppolo economic activities are mainly based on agriculture: fruits, almonds, vegetables and olives are the main products. Despite the ancient agriculture tradition, tourism is an increasingly developed activity in Joppolo. Thanks to its halfway position between mountains and sea, it is a popular destination for tourists from June to September, and they are accommodated in an increasing number of hotels and tourist facilities. Joppolo is characterized by rocky beaches.
