The port of Corigliano, and Gioia Tauro as well, was built with the aim of promoting industrialization in Calabria (it was designed for the petrochemical industry). Located in the Corigliano Gulf, it is an entirely dig-out harbor and has a wide ovoidal evolution basin. At present, commercial and industrial activities, as well as mineral and concrete shipping, are limited, while fishing activity is flourishing. The limited number of ships entering the port contrasts with the sizes of the structure, where service areas cover a surface of 750.000 square meters.
The port is located in the Gulf of Corigliano, a part of the Gulf of Taranto, in the Northern Ionian Coast of Calabria, 1 M north of Schiavonea, between the Malfrancato stream and the water canal 1 M S. It consists of two large docks up to 12 m deep. The entrance is 200m large and it is bounded by two concrete walls. Close to the entrance there is an expansion basin with a diameter of 1 km and two docks. Along the docks, large well-lighted service areas are located.
Caution: Pay attention to the two sea farming/aquafarming sites in front of the port, run by private firms (see Order n°25/06),
Access: crew are not allowed to enter/leave the port at night (dawn/dusk) with the exception of local fishing boats and Coast Guard ships (Order n°44/04) until light signaling is restored.
Bans: No entry to the port area is allowed (see order n°41/06 del 22/06/06)
Services and facilities: tanker refueling (by authorization of the Maritime Authority, time 1-2 hours) – boat ramp – slipway – mobile crane (4 cranes owned by the port company) – security service – pilotage service – mooring crew – scuba divers.
